The Under 14's took part in a 7 aside competition onTuesday night in Owenbeg. With the team being so young they were entered into the C section of the competition. We were entered into a group with Claudy B, Moneymore, Magherafelt C and Ballymaguigan. First game was against Magherafelt, having never played them before, the young boys didn't know what they were in for. After a slow start the boys started to play some good football and won the game. Next up was Moneymore, after a tight game the boys won again. With confidence now high Claudy were next. Having already played Claudy in the league the boys knew it would be a tough game. From the throw in drumsurn took the game to claudy and came out easy winners. With a win in the next game against Ballymaguigan guaranteeing a place in the quarter finals the boys went for it from the start and won the game.
After a bit of a wait the draw was made for the quarter finals. Drumsurn were drawn against Glack. For a quarter final the boys showed no nerves at all. The boys went out and played the game like it was any other and won the game comfortably, leaving them in the semi final against Ardmore. With the lights at Owenbeg now on the boys, they started to show the nerves for the first time. Ardmore came into the game, having just beat Dungiven C, and were a lot bigger than the small Drumsurn side. With the games now changed to 7 mins each way, the boys started off badly conceding a goal straight away. They then knew they were in a game going in a point down at half time. The second half Drumsurn run the game but couldn't find away past the Ardmore keeper. Shot after shot the keeper kept Drumsurn out. With time running out Ardmore scored a point to put them two up. Step up Séan (the man) Butcher, with Ardmore on the attack, Séan cut out a pass, got a busted nose and a free. Drumsurn get a point. One in it with 1min to go, with time nearly up the ball is kicked forward, Dara Rafferty jumps with a Armore player, he flicks the ball into Aaron Butcher's path, with just the keeper to beat Aaron puts the ball in the net, Drumsurn are in the final.
Nearly 11 o' clock at night and Drumsurn and Castledawson play in the final. Having played six games already the boys started the final in flying form. Unfortunately it wasn't to be as Castledawson were just too strong for the young Drumsurn side. With Michael Mullan having to go off injured Drumsurn couldn't win the ball in the middle and lost the game.
What a great night for this young side. Not one player could be singled out as the whole team were brilliant. Dylan Mitchell in nets pulled off some great saves and saved a penalty, Oran Rafferty was very good in defence and going forward to score two belters of goals, Séan Butcher, captain on the night, what a player he is going to be, he will be beter than Paul. Michael Mullan proved some boys wrong with his shooting on the night, Aaron Butcher scored the winner in the semis and scored a great penalty, Jordan O'Neill took some great scores when under pressure. Tiarnán McHugh unlike his father Joe, Tiarnán can score goals. Dara Rafferty, what a flick to set up the winner in the semis, great player on the ball. Ruairi Rafferty the SMALLEST player in the team not feared to take the big boys on and Johnathan McLaughlin another small player, good corner back. All these boys are Under 14 next year again execpt Jordan.
Great effort boys!
