The Bannvale Credit Union Derry Junior Camogie Championship Final
[ Friday 9th September 2016 ]
Drumsurn 5-7 Ballerin 5-3                 (Venue:Swatragh) (Referee:Mrs Eithine Hanson)

End of a 17 year drought for St. Matthew's Drumsurn

What a week for Drumsurn Camogie girls, winning two championship titles in two nights.

Following the U14 success the senior camogie girls beat neighbours Ballerin in the Junior Championship Final at Swatragh.

Having been beat in the final last year by Ballerin, the Drumsurn girls were hungry for the title, not wanting a repeat of last year.

The girls worked hard and showed great team work and skill, playing to the bitter end they confidently secure the 2016 title. The final score was (5-7) to (5-3).

Congratulations to all the players and their management team of Joe, Katrina and Rhonda. The last time Drumsurn won the Junior title was back in 1999, a 17 year gap but well worth the wait.

On behalf of the senior management team team we would like to thank the girls for their dedication and commitment over the past 3 years. They reaped the rewards on Friday night and there is certainly bigger and better things to come. We would also like to thank the Committee for their continued support throughout the year and most importantly to all who have followed us in the League and Championship campaigns.

Player of the match : Emer Mcateer; In a high scoring contest Emer was the difference between the two teams. Her goal was directly from a side line cut that nestled in the left hand corner of the net. Emer also dominated the game at midfield, winning primary possession and supplying the high scoring Drumsurn attack.

Reaction : Catherine Bradley; It has been 17 years since the cup came home to Drumsurn. Our keeper Denise, full-forward Shauneen and Katrina, one of our managers were also on that winning team back them. We are all ecstatic about the win, it's surreal. I don't think it's sunk in yet. It was a very emotional night, one that noe of us will forget. I think the U14 winning the night before too definitely gave us more determination. Two championship cups in two nights in our wee village - making history.

Scorers : Shauneen Mullan (3-2), Emer McAteer (1-3), Amy Gannon (1-0), Catherine Bradley (0-1), Aine Murray (0-1)
